Overview
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is the first model year of the sixth generation of one of the world's most recognizable SUVs. This year brings a few significant changes, namely a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an optional hybrid powertrain, both of which should be more efficient than previous V6 engines (without sacrificing performance). At the same time, the rugged exterior and Toyota Tacoma platform make the newest 4Runner easy to recognize and ensure it remains faithful to its reputation as a reliable all-terrain performer.
Who's It For?
The 2025 models are close enough to their roots that they will appeal to fans of past 4Runner generations. The reliability, available four-wheel drive, and a standard suite of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 features make this a reasonable choice for drivers who want something that can handle all the elements they could encounter during commuting or family trips. Meanwhile, a two-speed (high/low) transfer case, rear locking differential, and adjustable Multi-Terrain Select system will entice those who are a little more serious about off-pavement driving or overlanding.

New for 2025
The primary change for 2025 is the move to the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an optional hybrid system. Both engines should improve the fuel economy, which sits at 17 MPG (combined city/highway) for 2024 models. 2025 will also bring improvements to the infotainment system and a smart-key system controlled via a smartphone app.
Real-World Performance
The turbocharged 2.4L 4-cylinder engine delivers 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The engine standard on the base SR5, Limited, and TDR Sport and Off-road trims. Drivetrain options include two-wheel drive (2WD) with limited-slip differential, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time four-wheel drive, so 4Runner shoppers can select the option that best fits the conditions they will encounter.
The i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain pairs the same turbocharged 2.4L with a 48 hp electric motor and 1.87-kWh battery. Not only will this improve fuel efficiency, but it also significantly increases power to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. With these figures, the hybrid powertrain is the most powerful ever on a 4Runner. It increases the towing capacity to 6,000 lbs.
The i-Force MAX is standard on TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum trims and available on TDR Off-road and Limited models. Off-road features will continue to be a hallmark of the 4Runner in 2025. For instance, the newly available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect feature allows the tires to stay in contact with the surface on uneven terrain, and the 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles allow the 4Runner to negotiate steep terrain.
